Families, Phooey!: Gullah Gullah Island #6
Published in Paperback by Aladdin Library (September, 1996)
Authors: Carin Baker and Elizabeth Wolf
Average review score:

Good Moral Content
When Vanessa's cousin spills juice on her overalls, takes all of the raisins, and scribbles on her picture, Vanessa decides she doesn't like her family anymore. Vanessa's aunt shows her an old photo album from when she and Vanessa's mother were growing up. Though they did not always get along, they had their good times. Vanessa then decides that families aren't so bad afterall.
Children and parents may respond to Families, Phooey! in a positive manner because of its colorful illustrations, realistic plot, and good moral content. However, it tends to follow the television show's exact plot. This could encourage children to watch TV rather then read the book. On the other hand, the illustrations follow the story very closely and go well with the text. The characters' features are not as diverse as they could be. The illustrator tends to use the same color schemes for each character. Different color schemes may allow for more creative imagination. The story's illustrations celebrate the connection between all parents and children by illustrating the shared events between generations. Overall Families, Phooey! is a great book to share with your child.

The fiftieth gate : a journey through memory
Published in Unknown Binding by Flamingo ()
Author: Mark Raphael Baker
Average review score:

The Fiftieth Gate
The Fiftieth Gate is a 'journey into memory' integrating the author's parent's stories of the Holocaust and their survival with historical fact. He exchanges their stories for historical facts of the Holocaust, discovering that his mother is the lone survivor from her village.

Baker searches to find out the events of his own background in order to find his own identity and family background. A totally honest and thought provoking book which allows its reader to wake up and realise the disasters of human hatred in Hitler's persecution of Jews. Very upfront and in your face.

The Fighting Kings of Wessex: A Gallery of Portraits (Medieval Military Library)
Published in Paperback by DaCapo Press (April, 1996)
Author: George P. Baker
Average review score:

The Fighting Kings of Wessex
This is a fascinating book that has a lot of detail in it, and my only criticism of this book is that it gets somewhat detailed due to so many people being discussed, but it is very well written, and I enjoyed it very much; I wish to thank Combined Books for re-printing the book in 1996. History books like this enrich my life, and this book comes close to a five star review: it is higher than 4 stars, but I could not state that in the rating.

Finding Hope with God's acceptance...outstanding book to see
Dr. Don Baker offers personal insights and Biblical perspective to crises we all face in times of uncertainty--the loneliness of depression, the pain and mystery of suffering, and the fear of revealing our innermost selves. Finding acceptance and love is at the heart of any attempt to deal with feelings of guilt, worthlessness, rejection or hopelessness, and this release is a transformation from negative-dewelling doubter to love-conscious believer in God's acceptance of us.

The flowers of William Morris
When I bought this book I was expecting pictures of flowers. Instead I end up reading a book on Mr. Morris' life. His love of flowers and wonderful drawings have made this book better than I could have imagined it.

The Formation of the Christian Bible
Published in Paperback by Sigler Pr (September, 1997)
Authors: Hans Von Campenhausen and J. A. Baker
Average review score:

A well-written book
I read this book for Undergrad studies on the early Christian Church. I found it to be extrememly well-documented and very thorough. It can be a bit much for someone who is not familiar with thought at the time. It does not document the acutal books in the Canon, but what thought processes surrounded the formation. It delves into Marcion's early canon and the resulting backlash of the orthodox world.
I recommend this book to those who are very interested in the early Christian Church and thoughts at the time. Be prepared to read Greek and Latin fluently.

From Needmore to Prosperity: Hoosier Place Names in Folklore and History
Published in Paperback by Indiana University Press (September, 1995)
Author: Ronald L. Baker
Average review score:

Fine Reference on Place Names
The folklorist, Ronald Baker, has written an excellent study of place names in Indiana. Thoroughly documented, this book is a fine guide for finding out how various towns and cities in Indiana got their names. What is especially interesting is Baker's introduction to this volume. He shows how there are common patterns to the development of place names in the state. Baker then provides ways for readers to draw conclusions about the history of the state by finding out how various names came to be. This book is very useful for understanding the folklore of Indiana, and it is a model for studies of place names in other states.
